デジタル時代に読む （２）
今日の午前中は、ビジネス英語のテキストを使っての勉強会をしました。
４人集まると、誰かが以前のフレーズを覚えていたりして、とても勉強になります。
私は記憶力がとんとないので、いつもすっとんきょうな「復習」しかできないのですが、
友達のお陰で以前に勉強した単語を思い出すことができて、とても助かっています。
午後からは、娘の授業参観に行ってきました。
算数の授業で、懐かしい「平行四辺形」と「台形」について学んでいました。
懇談会に参加せず帰宅している途中で雨が降り出し、今は雷も鳴っています。おぉ、怖い。
あまり時間はないのですが、昨夜トライしたディクテーションだけアップしておきます。
あちこち穴だらけです...（いつものごとく）。

Hughes says he and his wife are worried about their kids because they seem to spend so much time watching TV. Shiga says searching Internet is really more active than watching television. Kinkaid's worried about that the way kids write down computers and websites are harm their actual English ability.
1) I feel for you ... 気持ちはわかります。
"I feel for you" is a phrase people often use to show a little bit sympathy. If you wanted to make it a little stronger, you could say "I feel sorry for you, Melinda." or "I understand your trouble, Melinda." So, a little bit lighter is "I feel for you, Melinda."
2) hunker down ... やる気を出す
Hughes used various phrases that are kind of interesting. First, he talks about "hunker about." To hunker is to squat or to crouch, to get down low near the ground. It's also used to mean "take shelter" or "channel into doing something," so in this case, that's a meaning he is using here.
3) hit the books ... 熱心に勉強する
The next phrase he used is "hit the books." "Hit the books" means study. The verb "hit" is used in a similar way with some other nouns. For example, you can "hit the hay" or "hit the sack" and those mean go to bed. You can "hit the bottle," which means "drink alcohol to excess usually. You can "hit the road," which means "leave."
4) idiot box ... テレビ
Finally, he mentions the "idiot box." That's a fairly common idiom to refer to television. Other words people use are "small screen" which is actually more positive than "idiot box." It's comparing to "large screen" or "movies." Another phrase people use is "boob tube," which is much more similar to "idiot box." I wonder what'll happen to "big tube," though, because now more and more people are getting flat, panel television and the cathode-ray tube sort of the original TVs are slowly disappearing.
5) elliptically ... 省略が多くてわかりにくい
Kinkaid mentions "elliptically plotted stories." "Elliptically" is a word you don't see too often in English, depending on the context to have various kinds of meanings. It's used often mathematics and （ ） like that. In this case, it has two possible meanings. One is extreme a （commonly??） speech or writing, meaning that writers and speakers dropped out absolutely everything, that is, absolutely not necessary. The second meaning is that's related to something that's deliberately obscure, you've written or spoken in a way that makes it very difficult for the reader or listeners to understand what you are talking about.
なんか、that ばっかりの英文になってる気がする...。
ここの解説は、うまく聞きとれませんでした。原因はもちろん、語彙不足です。
6) texting ... 書き方
Kinkaid also uses the word "text" as a verb. That's pretty new, probably it's only come up with the last a few years since you could do texting with cellphone. I think it might have started with cellphones, although it could be computers. But in any case, until the Internet and such electronic media, the word "text" was a noun.
7) shorthand for ... 〜の略語
"Shorthand for " in English actually refers to style of writing that has many set abbreviations so that after you've studied it, you can write just about as quickly as people speak. In the past, before computers and recording devices, secretaries and administrative assistants had to take down dictation. They had to write quickly memos and letters that their bosses were speaking to them. Shorthand, however, is often used also to mean abbreviation or shortening.

ＮＨＫ「実践ビジネス英語」松下さんの英語解説ディクテーションを訂正してます。
Anger Management (４)
The group talks about some of the issues stemming from an anger or anger management. Tyson says that although it's not always easy, with practice, you can see things from another person's point of view.
1) rage ... 激怒
Another word for anger is rage. And "rage" might be actually a better word to describe Medigan's reactions because "rage" is strong, passionate uncontrolled anger.
Medigan が「マッドガン」に聞こえて、ここでかなり悪戦苦闘してしまいました！
登場人物の名前だとわかって、拍子抜け。
Yeah, I can understand "air rage" sometimes

I can understand that one, too. Another one that happens is when the 10 items or less line is invaded by somebody with the shopping cart full
カッコ部分、ルッカ とかなんとか聞こえます。with か、whose かと思ったけど、違うみたい。

このビジネス英語で以前、road rage という表現を習いました。
Even the phrase is interesting, because it should be 10 items or fewer because you can count them. But I think it's always 10 items or less.
松下さんが「ちょっとおかしいんだけど」と説明してくださった 10 items or less は、ウィキペディアにもあるように、ＴＶドラマや映画のタイトルにもなっているみたいですよ。私は観たことありません。
2) heavy ... 重苦しい
In English, the word "heavy" has been used to mean profound or serious mostly in slang since around the late 1930's. If you see movies from 60's , you might hear someone say "Heavy, man," which means, whatever the person was listening to, whatever conversation they heard, was
3) cross ... 怒らせる
"To cross someone" is to interfere with what they are doing or to obstruct what they want to do, or even to thwart them, meaning you
thwart は、くじく、妨げるの意味。
I'm cross. ... 怒ってます。
That sounds a little bit like an old-fashioned elementary school teacher, though/

3) heat ...
In this case, Tyson is using the word "heat," "in the heat of the moment." to talk about the intensity or the pressure or even the passion of the moment. Anger is sometimes called passion.
You can also use the word "heat" with the meaning of

昨日の英会話サークルでは、はじめて「宿題」がでました！
ネイティブゲストを招くようになってから、おそらく第１回目の「宿題」です。
先延ばしにしないよう、今日中に片付けなくちゃ。その前に、ディクテーションを。
今日はまた午前中にフリートーキングに参加してきました。

Kinkaid complains about her daughter's reading skills working on?? a conversation on how new digital media's seem to be changing the way people read and gather information. Kinkaid's daughter prefers her computer to books. Shiga says he was a natural bookworm.
下線部分は、ど〜〜〜〜しても曖昧にしか聞こえませんでした。
1) What's a mother to do? ... 母親としてどうしたらいいのでしょう？
"What's a mother to do" is kind of a set phrase, although you can substitute other people in place of mother. It's almost a bit of a trick question. It's not that a person actually asking for advice "What should I do as the mother of this child?" That would be more common （スペイラル） essence for advice. In this case, she's just indicating that she doesn't know what to do.
spiral essence のはずないわいなと思いつつ、いろいろ考えたのですが、ギブアップ。
2) at my wits' end ... お手上げで
People use the phrase "at my wits' end," "at one's wits' end" when you don't know what to do any more. Wit is kind of an older word for intelligence or sanity.
sanity は、正気の意。
3) My parents couldn't tell me to do anything.
The Japanese phrase sounds a little more direct than English phrase in this situation. "My parents couldn't tell me to do anything" isn't, though, literal meaning, of course, they can tell him to do all kinds of things. It's just that he wouldn't do them.
4) I know all too well. ... 言いたいことはよくわかります。
Kinkaid uses the phrase "all too well," "She knows all too well." She's just saying that she's familiar with his situation. I think a lot of parents and children have a similar relationship.
5) adolescence ... 思春期
And Kinkaid also talk about "adolescence." "Adolescence" is a noun that refers to the time when people change from children to adults. Other people might call it the teen-years things like that. The word "adolescence" is related to adults. Both of them come from the Latin word for "grow up."
6) bookworm ... 本の虫
The word "bookworm" in English seems to have been used first for people. It didn't originally refer to kinds of insects and creatures that eat paper or glue. The word used also for things like book lice or silverfish wasn't used until the middle of the 19th century.
私も小学校の頃は、「本の虫」でした。
父親に叱られても本が手放せなくて、布団の中でこっそり読んでいました。
お陰で視力はみるみる悪くなり...、自業自得です。
7) anime ... アニメ
"Anime" is the word that, I think, many English speakers have become familiar with whether they actually watch anime or not. "Anime" is short for animation in English, which means moving or giving a life to something that was(?) moving. In the U.S., if it doesn't come from Japan, it's often called "cartoons" or "animation."
8) You don't say. ... 本当ですか？
"You don't say." is a phrase people often use when they are somewhat surprised by something they've just heard. A similar thing to say would be "Really?"
このフレーズは、映画「赤毛のアン」で出てきました。
孤児院から男の子を連れてくるはずだったと聞かされたスペンサー夫人が、
Oh, Marilla. You don't say!
（まあ、マリラ。そんなこと！）
と驚きます。間違って連れてこられた女の子がアンだったというわけです。
「赤毛のアン」のストーリー展開は、ハリポタと同じくらいおもしろい。

フレンズ観るなら、どっち？
午前中、バレーボールで汗を流しました。
練習が終わった後、携帯電話がプルプルプル....。
英会話サークル仲間の Erikaさんが、「今、テレビでフレンズやってるよ！」と教えてくれました。家に帰って新聞の番組欄を見たら、すごいすごい。１１時３０分から正午まで、二ヶ国語放送で「フレンズ」が放送されてる♪
今日のタイトルは、「レイチェルのトラバーユ」だったそうです。
シーズン�靴裡隠囲辰砲覆蠅泙垢諭�シーズン�気�ら放送されていたのでしょうか。
うかつでした。知らなかった。

映画は大好きで、「赤毛のアン」から「ハリポタ」、ケイト・ウィンスレットが出演している「ホリデイ」など何度もくり返して観ているのですが、英会話に役立つ表現をもっとも効率よく学習できるのは、やっぱりＴＶドラマ「フレンズ」が１番のような気がします。
少しずつ少しずつ、お小遣いをためて購入しているのですが、今やっとシーズン�犬泙能犬瓩襪海箸�できました。
テレビで「フレンズ」を観るのもいいですが、ＤＶＤを集めるのも楽しみのひとつです。
フレンズで英語を楽しむなら、南谷三世さんのこの本もオススメです♪
